Mid Day Sun

Acrylic on canvas by Victoria Zyluk

Mid Day Sun captures a narrow urban street washed in the strong light of the day. Pale walls, sunlit pavement and flashes of blue, violet and ochre create a striking contrast between brilliant sunlight and the deep, cool shadows cast by the surrounding buildings.

In the foreground, a small group gathers around a street-side table, providing a lively focal point against the angular architecture. Splashes of turquoise, orange, white and red bring colour and movement to the scene, while a few loosely painted figures farther along the street draw the eye into the distance.

Victoria's expressive brushwork leaves edges softened and details deliberately understated. Rather than describing every window, doorway or figure precisely, blocks of colour and confident strokes suggest the shapes of the buildings and the activity within the street. The dramatic passage from the shadowed foreground into the brilliant open roadway gives the painting its sense of depth and, above all, the unmistakable intensity of midday sun.
