An Artist's View September, 2024 by Victoria Zyluk

“Art as a cultural artifact is a method for narrating anthropological experiences of the creator: visual artist , poet, author, musician “ – Dr. Irene Naested

Dr. Irene Naested, full professor and professor emerita from Mount Royal University, is a visual artist, author and educator. Her poetry, prose and art have been published nationally and internationally. Over many years she has been a devoted advocate for maintaining the inclusion of The Arts in the curriculum as well as for their integration with other subjects.

Art is Poetry and conversely Poetry is Art. We humans have a need for self- expression. Each is a language that is used to express emotion, communicate or explore ideas. Both are powerful tools with varied intentions. It is true that  both art and poetry can influence politics or foster  social change . We respond to posters and advertising. Political campaigns depend on art! Not all poetry is beautiful nor is all art. There is no prescribed subject matter or way mandated in producing the works. Scripts of many ancient and modern languages are in themselves works of art. Consider the hieroglyphics, cuneiform writing and middle eastern script. The form they take are as varied as the artists who create them. Poetry may have a meter and rhythm but not always. Lines can vary in length.  The artistry occurs in the words chosen (i.e. alliterative, repetitive) to create imagery and contribute to the mood. Meaningful colours are used in art, whereas words are used in poetry. And it is through these words that generate a mental image or evoke an emotional connection. These techniques are also found in art-making in the form of varied brushstrokes, quality of brushstrokes (decisive, bold, timid, directional, intersecting). Shapes may also contribute to the overall goal. And this leads me into the theme or focal point in the artwork. Sometimes one needs to explore the work carefully. Other times it is obvious and all elements of its creation serve to convey the message or intended feeling.

I continue to marvel at the creative impulse and the infinite variety in art, writing, music and dance. But that is a topic for another day. In the meantime let’s celebrate the gift of creativity!
