“Being an artist is a unique means of expressing oneself”. – Mary Ann Tarini Hews

Expressing yourself means revealing or portraying one’s feelings or views through speech, writing, some form of art or behaviour. It is a way of communicating with the world around us and sharing our thoughts, feelings, and ideas. Self- expression can take a variety of forms including words, choices or actions. When we express ourselves we are sharing a part of ourselves which makes us feel more connected with others. Art, Music, Dance, Writing, Culinary pursuits, Carpentry, Construction, Architecture……and the list goes on……are all forms of expression. The next question is “Why is it important?”

“Neuroscience is teaching us that self – expression might be one, if not the most important way, for people to connect, navigate and grow with each other.” --- Judith Glaser

From ego we move to a state of partnering and this has tremendous possibilities for solving conflicts! However, we must realize that the value of self – expression varies widely across cultures and countries. Art is a vehicle , a place to let go of expectations and be ourselves.  An artist has a voice and speaks through their art. Their voice is heard and whether the viewer chooses to respond or not, the artist has spoken.

I will end with this quote from Martha Graham:

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost forever.”
